Prepared for Success: How One Conversation Elevated Every EAOC Member

This week’s EAOC morning meeting took an unexpected—and highly impactful—turn with a surprise Round Table Discussion that quickly became one of the most engaging conversations we’ve had in recent months.

Instead of a traditional presentation, each of our valued business owner members was invited to share one simple but powerful insight: what is the one thing you wish your clients would do before meeting with you? The responses were thoughtful, practical, and, at times, eye-opening. From coming prepared with clear goals and financials, to doing a bit of upfront research, to simply being honest about expectations—each perspective revealed how small steps taken in advance can dramatically improve outcomes for everyone involved.

What made this discussion especially meaningful was the setting. Surrounded by trusted peers who understand the day-to-day realities of running a business, members were able to speak candidly about both challenges and opportunities. There’s a unique value in being able to exchange ideas in a room where the common goal is mutual success. It’s not just about sharing frustrations—it’s about identifying solutions and learning how to better serve our clients and each other.

This kind of dialogue also strengthens one of the core pillars of EAOC: generating high-quality, effective referrals. When we better understand how our fellow members operate—and what helps them deliver their best work—we become more intentional and strategic in the leads we pass along. It’s no longer just about making a connection; it’s about making the right connection, at the right time, with the right preparation.

Ultimately, this round table served as a powerful reminder of why our meetings matter. Beyond networking, beyond referrals, and beyond weekly routines, EAOC provides a space for collaboration, growth, and genuine support. When we invest time in understanding one another, we elevate not only our individual businesses, but the collective strength of the group.

If this week proved anything, it’s that sometimes the most valuable meetings are the ones you don’t see coming.

As they grew, so did their order size. And although the member has not been a member for several years, this client has accounted for a total revenue of $60,000 at very nice profit margins. When I was invited to be a part of the EAOC, I had no idea that a “by invitation only” networking group existed. Well, we’ve been around since the early 70’s. And, what a great group of business associates we have.

Often, merely providing information is just what was needed. These professionals are like my business partners, they are champions of my business as well as their own.

I have been a member for many years in several different classifications. EAOC has always provided me with a steady flow of leads. However the biggest benefit I’ve received has been “outside” of the core purpose of leads. A past member John Valentine, mentioned to me that he had heard about some industrial land for sale in Costa Mesa. I ended up buying it, building a warehouse and running my business at the time (South Coast Stationers) there for about thirty years. It was an excellent investment.

Benefits of membership include direct business from other members resulting in $10,000 in business and direct business with other members that resulted in excellent service and financial savings.

In the last thirty four years the business has grown to fourteen associations. We employ eleven full time and one part time employee.
